Chiropractic Adjustments
Chiropractic adjustments are an amazing tool to not only improve spinal health and function, but to improve overall health and vitality in the body as well. When certain segments of your spine become stiff and dysfunctional, it doesn’t only drive pain, but also interfere with optimal function throughout the body. Your spine houses your spinal cord, and the nerves that supply your entire body exit near the joint of your spine as well. By restoring proper motion and function to the spine through chiropractic adjustments, we can allow your nervous system to operate without interference.
Through expert palpation techniques, posture assessment, and motion testing, we find the specific areas in your spine that are affecting your health and deliver safe and effective adjustments. Dr. Tim uses multiple adjusting techniques to tailor the treatment specific to the patient’s needs and comfort level, to ensure you get the care you need.
What are the benefits of adjustments
- Restoring proper motion at the joint being treated
- Decrease in muscle tension
- Relaxation of nerve irritation
- Pain reduction
What is the “popping” sound?
A very frequent question is what exactly is the popping sound? The pop is actually called a cavitation, which is a created from pressure releasing from gas build up in the fluid between the joint space. The pop indicates that motion has been introduced into that joint, so that that joint can move more freely and not be restricted anymore.
Trigger Point Therapy
What is a trigger point?
A trigger point refers to a knot within a muscle that is one of the highest points of tension in that muscle. These trigger points can not only affect the pain in that muscle and the function of it, but also can refer pain to a different area in the body. This means that the pain you are noticing in one area, may be coming from a different area all together. An example of this, is trigger points in the muscles of your upper shoulders causing headaches.
Trigger point therapy is a technique centered around finding these tight points or knots within a muscle, and applying pressure to them to dissolve away the muscle tension or pain they are causing. Dr. Tim knows which muscles are affected given where your pain is, and expertly finds and eliminates the trigger points to dissolve away your pain.
Active Muscle Release Therapy
Active muscle release therapy refers to soft tissue work done with active motion coupled with trigger point and massage therapy techniques. Some also refer to this therapy as “pin and stretch” muscle release, in which the doctor applies pressure to the tightest points in a muscle, and then takes that muscle through motion in order to enhance the release. This therapy yields fantastic results, as it not only helps the muscle to release, but also help to restore proper length and tension to the muscle being treated as well.
This technique also works wonders for releasing fascial tension as well. Fascia is a connective tissue membrane that covers and gives shape and stability to all of our muscles. When the fascia becomes tight and forms adhesions, it needs to be manipulated in order to release that tension and allow the muscle to move and function freely. Active muscle release therapy helps to release both the muscle and the fascia, in a way that is very effective and feels amazing.
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)
IASTM, often referred to as “scraping”, is a technique that utilizes a metal tool that has a dull edge on it to glide along the top of the skin and muscles. The gliding of the tool over the skin helps to release muscular tension, break up adhesion in the fascia that overlies the muscle, and to improve blood flow in the area being treated. When the fascia becomes tight and forms adhesions, it needs to be manipulated in order to release that tension and allow the muscle to move and function freely. Although the term “scraping” may sound uncomfortable, this technique can be very gentle and always tailored to the specific patient’s comfort level.
IASTM is great for muscle strains, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, ligament sprains, and various other muscle dysfunctions. When paired with chiropractic adjustments and other soft tissue therapies, it can boost the healing process even further.
Cupping
Cupping therapy is a relatively new treatment used by western medicine, but has been a staple in eastern medicine for centuries. Cupping therapy, also known as negative pressure therapy, is a safe and non-invasive technique that utilizes different sizes of silicone cups suctioned to the skin to decompress the area under the cup. This suction or pull from the cups, creates a negative pressure in the muscle and fascia, and helps to release the muscle being treated. Other benefits of cupping include increased blood flow, increases in elasticity of the muscle, and improved lymphatic drainage.
Here at North Sound Spine and Sports Therapy, we are trained in using cupping therapy and know how to tailor the treatment to each patient’s specific needs and comfort level. This treatment can be a game-changer for chronic muscle tension, muscle strains, tendonitis, and overall stiff and tight muscles.
Patient-Specific Corrective Exercise
One of the many treatments that makes us stand apart, is corrective exercise or rehab. This is included in every treatment plan, and the exercises given are always specific to the patient and not taken from the same protocol for certain conditions. Through postural assessment, gait analysis, functional movement screens, and soft tissue examination, we prescribe the exact exercises needed in order to get you out of pain, and keep it that way.
Exercises will typically follow a progression from muscle releases and stretches, joint mobilizations to improve overall mobility, and then strengthening exercises to help rebuild stability and resiliency in the body. From desk workers, weekend warriors, to elite athletes, we will expertly build you an exercise program to help you get back to doing what you love, feeling strong and confident.
Prenatal and Postpartum Care
Pregnancy is a beautiful thing that brings about life, yet can also be very hard on the mother. Low back pain, hip pain, and various other types of pain are so common during pregnancy, and here at North Sound we offer safe and effective treatments for the common ailments that come along with your pregnancy journey. Our combination of gentle adjustments, soft tissue work, and simple exercises helps to reduce pain, strengthen your core and hips, improve function during your daily activities, and also has been shown to help with the birthing process as well. Postpartum care is equally as important, and in today’s medical community often overlooked. As your body is working itself back to normal, we can help ease that process by making sure your hips and spine are in alignment, while also helping you to build back strength as your body is ready for it.
